I paint this pine not for its form, but for its “fenggu”—its spirit and integrity. It grows on a cliff, rooted in barren rock. With dry, powerful strokes, I carved its weather-beaten trunk, a testament to its long struggle against the elements. It doesn’t bow to fate; it transforms hardship into strength.
I rendered the needles with immense patience, creating dense, intricate layers that contrast with the gnarled trunk. This shows elegance and vitality thriving in adversity. It’s a declaration to live fully, with dignity, no matter the environment.
The background is simplified. Distant mountains dissolve into a sea of clouds. The vast white space is at once mist and the boundless universe, giving all visual weight to the pine. It stands alone, the center of the cosmos.
This painting is my tribute to the “junzi” (noble person) spirit. In our impetuous age, I hope this pine offers a quiet power: to root inwardly, stand independently, and face the world with a calm smile.
