I’ve always been fascinated by boundaries. This painting explores the line between heaven and earth, the mortal and the ethereal. The upper part is a saturated Klein blue sky—a spiritual declaration of ideals and serenity. A ribbon of cloud breaks the silence, heralding the world below. This is the Celestial Realm.
Contrasting this is the churning sea of clouds, built with layered ink washes to give it a powerful, wave-like volume. This is the Cloud Realm. From this chaos, mountains burst forth. Inspired by Song Dynasty landscapes, I used “axe-cut” strokes for their rocky solidity, yet combined blue-green colors with ink washes for a sense of growth.
But the true heart is the small houses I placed at the focal point. They sit on a terrace above the clouds, a tiny, resolute spark of the Human Realm in this grand, intimidating vista. They represent our will to survive, to find a place of peace. This painting tells a story of human courage in the face of the unknown.
